“When you know you just know …"
That’s what you almost always hear whenever someone talks about how they knew someone was meant for them. Like a person’s “soul mate” or “life partner.”
You probably heard this before when you asked someone who is engaged or married, “How did you know they were the right one for you?”
Honestly, I used to get a little annoyed whenever I heard the words “When you know ... you just know!” And that’s only because I’m a girl that likes details.
Anyway, that same concept of just knowing can apply to your career, your life purpose, the tacos you just ate at the local Mexican restaurant. When your heart knows, it knows what is oh-so-right.
But I will say that you’ve got to be open to listening to it - it being your heart. And at the same time don't allow your natural instincts to compromise your integrity, your values, and your common sense, along the way.
When you understand who you are, and what you value without compromise
It’s much easier to see and to really understand, who, what, and where it is, that you truly are meant to align yourself with.
And things can magically fall into place when you understand what you really want or don’t want
Linda Perez, Founder and CEO of Chicago Women Empowerment Group, and I connected in the summer of 2016, when I ended up at her backyard birthday party. Fast-forward 7 months later and we’re sitting across from one another at a co-working space on 79th Street - and she was glowing with life.
The reason for the glow was from the “baby" she just breathed life into. And that baby was Chicago Women Empowerment Group.
As we sat there talking, it was so uplifting to hear how much she intents to accomplish for the community through CWEG, and the authenticity in her spirit and demeanor.
And this still happens every single time I meet with her. She is always up to something new and sharing ideas for activities and events - all in the name of building up a community that is overlooked and undeserved (Chicago's south side). And being of service to women in general.
I met Linda at the co-working space that day with the intention to do some sort of volunteer work, and because I wanted to partner with an organization whose main intent was to simply help women. Helping those who don't even realize that help is possible when it comes to various aspects of their daily lives. Of course men fall into that category. But like Linda said to me,
"When we heal the women of our communities, we heal the home, which plants the seeds for healing our men.”
I knew that I had experiences, strengths, knowledge, and the resources to help, and I wanted to start sharing those things already. You always hear stories of brutality, crime, abuse, rape, manipulation, infidelity and such, that surrounds women and young girls on a regular on-going basis.
It doesn’t even matter if they are in the projects or the suburbs.
And I just got tired of hearing all of those stories, and not at least trying to use my experiences and knowledge to impact a life. Even if it’s just one single life.
So, when I asked Linda why she decided to establish CWEG, here’s what she had to say:
“I decided to create Chicago Women Empowerment Group due to the lack of education in the under-served communities of Chicago. I wanted to empower our community through classes and workshops so that we can produce more entrepreneurs and independently thinking, knowledgeable individuals. I also wanted to rebuild our community’s sense of sisterhood by sharing resources and building stronger relationships among women - one woman at a time.
Why now? Because our people perish every single day because of a lack of knowledge. Knowledge that isn’t always easily shared or found. And I received this vision on how I can help this community not only on a business level but also by giving back to it as a business owner.
What keeps me motivated? It’s knowing that I have piece a of the puzzle that can deeply help our community in so many ways. Especially but not limited to, helping the homeless, our environment, and our children.
I would have to say I am also motivated by my grandmother on my mother’s side and the ladies in the Roseland community. And not only those women, but the parents of my daycare. Seeing them working two to three jobs, but still struggling day-to-day.
Giving them the resources they need, we can stop the struggle. That keeps me motivated.”
When Linda shared those words with me, I just knew
I knew that her intentions and values were on the same page as mine. And I also went with my heart’s knowing that this was the right organization to share my time with. Their goals don't compromise my values nor my interests in the least bit.
Because when you know, you just know ... right?
This knowing can apply to your love life yes, but in this case, this has everything to do with personal callings and life purposes.
So what has life been calling you to do?
Deep inside of you is your personal calling, your purpose, and your passions. And they are going to keep knocking on your heart’s door. Even when you try to tune them out. Sometimes it shows up as an urge to just get up out of your chair … at work ... in the middle of the day, or after reading a heartbreaking article on Facebook, and just be inspired to extend a helping hand to someone in need. Or even to help yourself grow for the better.
Like that homeless man you passed on your way home the other night. Or that time when a friend called you to share brutally honest details about a horrible experience she had in her relationship earlier that day.
Instances like that can be part of your calling and purpose.
Even the simple and small times you’ve helped someone or yourself, you’re learning how to embrace your reason or reasons for being here. And by here I mean on this earth, in your community, in your circle - whatever it may be.
There are three big things that will help you to see if something is really meant for you: time, action, and allowing. So even if you just know someone or something is just right for you - you’re still going to have to put in the work, a.k.a action. And as a reminder - keep following your heart, but don’t compromise and forget the positive things in your life.
Keep looking at yourself in the mirror on a regular and push past the physical features - and love you - as is.
That’s what we (CWEG) want to do here.
To help you to see your unique gifts and to crack open your soul, so that you can grow and flourish in healthy ways
Honestly, you might not have been taught how to do this. So we want to teach you how.
So, as we move forward with this blog, we plan to take you on a content journey of self improvement and self-love. You’ll read about topics ranging from understanding what healthy relationships look and feel like, setting yourself up to become a first time homeowner, to learning how to co-parent for the sake of your child’s greater good. And that’s just to name a few.
We hope you enjoy!
